Stop secret corporate gifts to the Trump Administration
 |
We already know that more than two dozen corporations donated to Donald Trump’s $300 million White House ballroom project (including Apple, Amazon, and Microsoft). And they each have much to gain by currying favor with Trump and his administration. But — while the White House claims the full list of donors has been made public — The New York Times reported that the White House has allowed some donors to remain secret. These hidden donors could be anyone: Criminals seeking presidential pardons, foreign governments seeking U.S. influence, corrupt corporations seeking federal contracts, or anyone with an interest in influencing the president. So Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Rep. Robert Garcia just introduced a bill, the Stop Ballroom Bribery Act (S.3191/H.R. 6085), to make it harder for corporations and billionaires to buy the favor of Trump or any future president by donating to their pet projects. Email your members of Congress and encourage them to sign on to this bill. Every co-sponsor sends a message to Trump that Congress won’t rubber stamp this corruption. The Stop Ballroom Bribery Act would: Ban anonymous donations to White House projects such as the Trump Ballroom Create a two-year ban on donors lobbying the federal government Require Congress to approve any donations from foreign governments Prevent the president, vice president, and their families or staff from soliciting donations And ban donations from individuals and organizations that would present a conflict of interest — such as from donors that want government contracts or to have enforcement actions against them dropped
This is a strong bill not just to guard against corruption in the Trump Administration but in future administrations as well. So we need to show every member of Congress that there is a groundswell of support for tackling corrupt gifts to the White House. Please send an email to Congress right away and urge your representatives to co-sponsor the Stop Ballroom Bribery Act. Thank you for taking action, George Public Citizen |
