Paul on lead guitar
There were two separate occasions where a musician hanging with George (one was Peter Frampton and I don't recall the other person) where the fellow musician says to George, "I really like your solo on X" and Geo says, "That was Paul."
"Oh, well, I really like your solo on Y" and Geo says, "That was
Paul."
It may have even applied to a third song, Z.
On Geo's song, "Taxman," he messed up his solo a couple times and Geo
Martin says to Paul, "You try it" and Paul nails it on the first try.
The "nasty" guitar on the opening of Sgt Pepper is Paul trying to do a
Hendrix.
When Stu Sutcliffe left the early Beatles, it was a question of who will
play bass.
John, at that point the leader, said it's not going to be him.
Geo was considered the lead guitarist, so it fell to Paul who later related
the image then of a bass guitarist was "a fat guy in the back."
So fast forward to his, er, Wings, when he's clearly the boss of
that band and he still plays bass!
Wings had two guitarists, Paul could have hired a bassist and played second
guitar...
Post-Wings, in gigs, Paul sometimes plays guitar.
