Killed Are Reduced to ‘Others’
“Israeli Strikes on Gaza Kill Three
Senior Militants, 12 Others,” reported
an AP headline (5/9/23). Twelve other,
less senior militants? No, the “others”
included “at least 10 civilians,” the
story reported, including “two of the
commanders’ wives, several of their
children and civilian neighbors.”
It wasn’t until the tenth paragraph
that the story revealed that the dead
“included four women and four children”—information that would likely
have been in the story’s headline had
the killing been carried out by an
official enemy.
