Stand Strong Against the Oligarchs

Dear FAIR Friends,

 

While the Trump/Musk administration continues to attack everything our movement has worked to build—

a free press, economic equality, civil rights, freedom of expression—we pledge to stand strong against the

oligarchs. The state of our democracy is looking bleak, but that’s exactly why our work must continue.

We’re launching into spring with our seasonal fundraising appeal. Our goal is to raise $30,000 by May 1.

Thanks to your generous donations this winter, we have started this year off better than we did last year, but

there’s still work to do to stabilize our finances and close a significant gap in our budget we have sustained

since Covid.

Unsurprisingly, the party of “free speech” is banning books, ideologies, medical terminology, diversity

initiatives and protests—and brazenly attacking the free press. While corporate media of all stripes cravenly

bend the knee to this administration, FAIR exposes their treachery and brings you the truth they’re afraid

to print. 

 

We’ve been tracking the freezing effect Trump’s myriad threats, lawsuits and other actions have on a free

press. Whether it’s Meta backing down on factchecks, ABC choosing to settle a winnable defamation law

suit with Trump, or the Jeff Bezos-owned Washington Post refusing to run an ad critical of Elon Musk

and a satirical cartoon of Bezos and Trump, we know that the corporate press cannot be our only source of

information. We need a grassroots information movement that keeps the American people—not billionaires

and politicians—at the center. 

 

We are independent and nonprofit because we see our mission to inform the public and hold the powerful to

account as paramount. While our independence affords us more freedom to speak the truth, we are brac

ing for attacks. Last year, FAIR and other public interest groups were subpoenaed by Elon Musk in his suit

against Media Matters for its damning report on hate speech on X. We believe lawsuits like this are simply

fishing expeditions intended to intimidate and drain the resources of these organizations.But we refuse to be intimidated, especially because we know we have a vibrant community of media activists

behind us. As you know, we require resources to carry out this work and to remain financially stable through

the chaotic years ahead. 

 

We want to stress how important it is for this work to continue, during and beyond this administration.

do every day to smash the myth of the liberal media and advocate for a freer and more democratic media

system. We believe that if we can expose disinformation and bothsidesing, and expand the points of view we
