Suppose
you only get your news from the corporate media. In that case, chances
are you've never heard of NSPM-7, the Trump order directing federal law
enforcement to investigate and disrupt progressive nonprofit
organizations.
But NSPM-7 might be the most dangerous
attack on free speech in our lifetime — and independent news outlets
like Common Dreams are squarely in its crosshairs.
NPSM-7
defines constitutionally protected speech as "domestic terrorism" if
Trump disapproves of it and orders the Treasury Department to strip the
tax-exempt status of any nonprofit organization that supports
"anti-Americanism, anti-capitalism, and anti-Christianity," "extremism
on migration, race, and gender," or opposition to "traditional American
views on family, religion, and morality."
That's a death penalty
for any nonprofit organization that dares to criticize Trump or his
far-right agenda, and the order further directs the FBI's Joint
Terrorism Task Forces and IRS criminal division to prioritize such
organizations for potential prosecution.
Common Dreams has been on the leading edge in sounding the alarm about NSPM-7, and we have no intention of backing down.
But
this reporting also makes us a target for Trump's crackdown, and we're
counting on your support should Trump attempt to shut us down,
intimidate our supporters, or interfere with our nonprofit newsroom in
any way.
