Joseph,
Earlier this month, we told you that CREW sued the Trump administration
for its attempt to create secret databases that states are using to
purge voter rolls and that we’re asking the court to provide emergency
relief in our lawsuit ahead of this fall’s elections.
Today, we’re getting our day in court. We filed a preliminary
injunction to stop the administration’s creation of the SAVE database
which states are using to illegally purge voters from the rolls ahead of
the election.
CREW is taking action to hold the Trump administration accountable,
protect the foundation of our democracy and ensure every eligible
American has access to the ballot box—and we won’t back down.

Joseph,
We just asked a court, on behalf of the League of Women Voters
and others, for emergency relief in a class-action lawsuit challenging
the Trump administration’s attempt to purge voter rolls using secret
databases.
With elections quickly approaching in states across the country, CREW
and our partners filed an emergency motion in court yesterday to stop
the unlawful creation of “National Data Banks” that consolidate
sensitive, legally protected information on millions of Americans.
This isn't just a privacy violation—it’s a direct threat to our
democracy. These illegal databases give the administration the power to
target and silence eligible voters, particularly naturalized citizens,
based on unreliable information that the government itself admits can’t be trusted.
The court must act immediately to prevent eligible American voters from being disenfranchised in the upcoming elections.
We’re
taking action to defend the voting rights of Americans across the
country, protect our free and fair elections and hold the Trump
administration accountable for its unprecedented abuse of power. If
that’s a mission you believe in, donate today to help CREW continue this
critical work →
Trump and his administration have repeatedly mishandled
sensitive information and put Americans’ private data at risk. Now,
they’re threatening Americans’ civil liberties and voting rights.
Our preliminary injunction details how the so-called “Department of
Government Efficiency,” the Department of Homeland Security, Social
Security Administration, IRS and other agencies have secretly merged
personal data from across the federal government into centralized
“Interagency Databases” in direct violation of both the Constitution and the Privacy Act of 1974.
Our complaint alleges that the administration unlawfully transformed the
DHS’s Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) system into
a national citizenship database, pooling Social Security Administration
data known to be unreliable, which is now being used by some states to
purge voter rolls and initiate criminal investigations.
This pooling of sensitive data threatens to disenfranchise
eligible voters, particularly naturalized citizens who are at a higher
risk of being purged and subjects Americans to unwarranted
investigations. This is a threat to the foundation of our democracy.
The government’s unlawful creation of these secret databases should not
be allowed to continue. That’s why CREW is acting quickly to prevent
voters from being unlawfully purged from the voter rolls in this fall’s
elections. |
