Yesterday Donald Trump announced that he’s planning to sign an executive order that would undo state-level protections against artificial intelligence.
This is a controversial move and even many Republicans aren’t on board:
Congressional Republicans tried to add something similar to Trump’s Big Ugly Law over the summer, but the Senate stripped it out in a near-unanimous vote
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis called efforts to prevent states from regulating AI “federal government overreach”
And bipartisan teams of state legislators all across the country have worked with Public Citizen to pass strong protections against undisclosed AI-fabricated content in elections and fake AI-generated intimate “deepfake” images of people
Allowing Big Tech to escape regulation would be dangerous for our democracy and for the people — mostly women and girls — who would be targeted with intimate deepfakes.
So we need to do whatever we can to persuade the White House to abandon the effort entirely.
P.S. If you want to amplify your message, please also call the White House at 202-456-1111 and leave your message in support of states who are protecting their residents from dangerous AI.
