Friend, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) cannot keep getting away with unfathomable lawlessness and brutality. |
DHS cannot keep terrorizing communities, blocking oversight of its detention centers, ignoring court orders, using excessive force, and violating due process and privacy rights with impunity.
You and your neighbors should not be living in fear of federal agents. You deserve immediate, drastic, and decisive action to restrain this out-of-control agency.
DHS has a long history of abuse and misconduct, and we’ve been calling for reform for years. What we have seen over the past few months has made it clear that change is needed right now. Congress has ample power to rein in DHS and secure some measure of accountability. Right now, your representatives need to put partisan politics aside and band together in defense of your rights and safety.
And we have a plan of action for them. We are pressuring lawmakers on the Hill to claw back the tens of billions in no-strings-attached funding they gave DHS last year, and enact these enforceable provisions right now: |
- Create a right to sue federal law enforcement officers.
- Prohibit racial profiling.
- Fund oversight offices in DHS.
- Set standards for body-worn cameras.
- Limit the use of facial recognition technology.
- Restrict DHS purchases of personal information.
- Tighten rules regarding judicial warrants.
We must come together to demand a Homeland Security agency that actually protects the public — that actually respects the laws it is charged with enforcing. Congress cannot continue to fund an agency that is failing on these fronts.
