First, thank you all for having an interest in the Wisconsin Archeological Society.
As you know, we have a 123-year tradition as being the place for Wisconsin archaeology. Our public education events, programs, awards, and, of course, the journal have been long-running. They have benefited archaeology and persons interested in Wisconsin archaeology.
Today, we are seeing a problem. Our membership has been declining, and as I write this, we are at ½ the membership we had at this time last year. Membership is our prime income source. It is how we fund our events, programs, awards, and especially the journal.
That does not include all the in-kind time officers, board members, and volunteers contribute to the Society as well. Like all fiscally responsible not-for-profit organizations, we do have a rainy-day fund. At the current loss rate, it will be gone in a few years. Today, all membership organizations are seeing memberships decline. We are not alone, but it takes effort to retain the members that we already have. Lapsed members are among our avocational and our professional membership.
There is one sure way to get more memberships, and that is through you. I am asking that if you know a lapsed member, encourage them to join. The same goes for potential members that you may know. Our membership fees are reasonable and support so much. Please spread the word. We need your help.
