These remarks dovetail with a prior statement in which he acknowledged, “I have seen things I can’t explain.” Predictably, media reaction was swift to the latest comments, though the former president softened his statement in the days that immediately followed. The fact remains that a former president of the United States publicly used the word “real” in reference to extraterrestrial life.
Equally noteworthy was Obama’s follow-up comment regarding Area 51. He stated that there is no underground facility there “unless there’s this enormous conspiracy and they hid it from the president of the United States.” David Grusch has testified under oath before Congress that certain deeply compartmentalized legacy crash-retrieval programs were, in fact, withheld from the president's knowledge.
Similarly, current Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated, in The Age of Disclosure and elsewhere, that “rogue government elements have been hiding the truth … even keeping U.S. presidents in the dark.”
President Obama is widely regarded as a careful and deliberate public speaker. He does not casually make definitive statements on controversial matters. When a former commander in chief acknowledges “they’re real,” and simultaneously proffers speculation about Area 51, it deserves thoughtful attention.
