Mark M - The US and Russia have had treaties limiting nuclear weapons since 1972. As of this Thursday, that may no longer be true, when New START, a treaty negotiated by President Obama, will expire. At Peace Action, we believe New START’s limit of 1,550 deployed, strategic nuclear warheads is 1,550 too many. The only acceptable number of nuclear weapons in the world is ZERO. However, allowing New START limits to expire could allow, for the first time in decades, an unbridled nuclear arms race. Last September, Russia proposed continuing to abide by New START limits for at least a year, and perhaps longer, but has received no formal reply from the US. We can’t let this opportunity go by without raising our voices. Please join us tomorrow, February 3, for a Zoom Action Hour. We’ll have a special video presentation by U.S. Senator Ed Markey (D-MA), who named his SANE Act after our organization (we were founded as the National Committee for a SANE Nuclear Policy in 1957), to kick us off, so please plan to arrive on time. 👉 Never joined an Action Hour before? It's easy! In addition to a briefing on the status of the issue, we'll provide a sample call script and template email for you to contact Congress and the president. You make the calls and send the emails during the meeting, and we may have time for some report-backs, especially if you get to talk to a live operator or staffer. It should all take under an hour.
New START Action Hour Time: Feb 3, 2026 12:00 PM Eastern, 11:00 AM Central, 10:00 AM Mountain, 9:00 AM Pacific
Please feel free to pass along this invitation to friends, family and colleagues, and thank you for all you do in support of peace, and of Peace Action. For a (much) less nuclear world, Kevin Martin President, Peace Action |
