Dear WMCA Community,
I’m writing to share a difficult and deeply disappointing update.
Despite the collective efforts of WMCA and our partners, the meetings, advocacy, mobilization, and the powerful presence we showed at the Governor’s Eid gathering, Governor Tony Evers has signed AB 446 into law.
We want to be clear: our community showed up. We organized, we spoke directly to power, and we made our voices impossible to ignore. From consistent lobbying to meaningful engagement at every level, this was a true collective effort.
It is especially frustrating given that the Governor chose to veto the companion bill (AB 602), yet when it came time to hold firm against mounting pressure from IHRA-aligned lobbying forces and truly block this momentum, that leadership did not follow through.
This moment is upsetting. It is heavy. But it is not a reason to step back, it is a reason to step forward.
What this experience has made clear is something we must confront honestly: the forces we are up against are deeply rooted, structurally embedded, and sustained within today’s political systems and positions of power.
Change will not come from moments alone, it will come from sustained, organized, and growing community action.
So we are asking you not to disengage but to deepen your involvement.
We need our community:
- More organized
- More engaged
- More present in the spaces where decisions are made
- Well funded (our community is up against millions of dollars)
This is how we build the power needed to protect our communities and shape the future.
We are grateful to every single person who called, showed up, advocated, and stood with us. This work matters, and it continues.
We move forward together. Stronger. More organized. More determined.
