Call the Senate: No more DHS funding until ICE is held accountable
 |
Donald Trump recently announced that Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem will be moved out of her position at the end of the month. While this is an important victory, the fight isn’t over yet. Right now, DHS is still shut down and the Senate continues to debate new bills to fund it. Democrats are trying to secure meaningful accountability measures for ICE and have proposed limited funding bills to keep agencies like the TSA afloat while negotiations continue. Meanwhile, Senate Republicans are digging their heels in, refusing separate bills for agencies like the TSA, and hoping Democrats bow to pressure and abandon their push for ICE accountability. Recent reports of civil rights violations, a lack of transparency, and dangerous detention conditions make clear that ICE *must* be held accountable — and that Congress has the responsibility to act. For too long, ICE has operated with minimal Congressional oversight — conducting raids, detaining individuals in dangerous conditions, and making decisions with life-altering consequences largely outside public view. The funding discussions happening right now represent one of Congress' most powerful tools to demand accountability. Thanks for taking action, George Public Citizen |
