Tell Congress to reject Trump’s White House Ballroom Project
 |
Last week, we got two major updates that put Congress at the center of the fight to stop Trump from building a massive, gaudy, corporate-funded White House ballroom: The National Capital Planning Commission — the organization that oversees federal land and buildings in the District of Columbia — met on Thursday and Trump’s appointees voted to approve his ballroom plans. We protested outside. Trump’s hand-picked commissioners overrode opposition from DC officials and dismissed 35,000 public comments (nearly all against the project). A federal judge ruled that Trump’s ballroom project is illegal because the shocking demolition of the East Wing and construction of a ballroom nearly twice the size of the main White House was not authorized by the Constitution or by Congress. The judge also rejected the “convoluted funding scheme” to raise $400 million from companies and billionaires through a private charity and the National Park Service, and to move the money in “a sleight-of-hand maneuver” into a White House repair fund controlled by Trump. The judge’s ruling means that Congress must now vote YES or NO on Trump’s Ballroom.
Trump’s fight to remake the People’s White House into a palace for a king is moving through the courts and into Congress. We need to convince Congress to reject this shady, corporate White House ballroom scheme. |
