A $1.8 billion slush fund for MAGA criminals, crooks, and cronies is bad enough.

But another element of the preposterous “settlement” in Donald Trump’s bogus lawsuit against his own IRS is possibly even more outrageous.

The so-called settlement includes a clause by which the federal government is “FOREVER BARRED and PRECLUDED from prosecuting or pursuing” Trump, his children and other family members, and their numerous businesses over any existing issues related to their tax returns.

    A few thoughts:
    • This is a naked ploy to assure the Trumps that neither they nor their assorted businesses will ever be audited by the IRS for any wrongs they may have already committed.
    • One can’t help but wonder why the Trumps would want such immunity if they don’t have anything to hide.
    • For half a century — since Watergate — it has been IRS policy to audit the president and vice president every year they are in office.
    • If you want to be, are, or have been the Leader of the Free World, the rest of us are entitled to know if you have any potential financial conflicts of interest, if you are using the position to enrich yourself, or if you are engaged in a heretofore unimaginable campaign of corruption and graft.
Congress should pass legislation mandating the following:

    1. Candidates for president must release every tax return they filed over the previous 10 years.

    2. Presidents must release their returns each year they are in office, and those returns must undergo a thorough, independent audit by the IRS.

    3. Former presidents must release their returns for the first five years after leaving office, and those returns must also be audited.
