Tell Big Tech CEOs: Stop funding dirty energy for AI data centers
 |
Big Tech is funding the AI data center explosion that is wrecking communities and the planet. Meanwhile, Big Tech CEOs have the nerve to call themselves climate champions. Microsoft, Meta, Google, and Amazon have all made promises of net-zero emissions before 2050. And Nvidia has established goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. They told us they would help speed up the clean energy revolution. But that’s not what they’re really doing. Meta, for example, is paying for the construction of seven new gas-powered plants to fuel its biggest data center. And data center projects by Amazon, Meta, and Google are even relying on coal, the dirtiest energy source. Big Tech might be saying the right words, but it’s doing all the wrong things. We need to send a message to Big Tech CEOs at companies that pledged to reduce their emissions.
Out of roughly 1,500 data center projects now under construction in the United States, gas projects tied to *just 11 of them* could emit more greenhouse gases every year than the country of Morocco. If that’s not bad enough, Big Tech is selling AI tools to Big Oil to turbocharge *new* oil and gas exploration, discovery, and recovery. Microsoft is the top cloud provider for the oil & gas industry. Amazon follows in second place while Google is third. And chip manufacturer and AI innovator Nvidia is now partnering with an oil company to build an “AI Factory for Energy.” Big Tech is on the wrong side of history. Tell tech CEOs to correct course on climate before things get worse. Clara Public Citizen |
