Mark, For about a decade, CREW has been calling out Trump’s unprecedented corruption, but it just got a lot worse: CBS: DOJ's settlement with Trump bans IRS from taking action against him over old tax returns On Monday, the Trump administration announced the creation of a $1.776 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund” to compensate President Trump’s allies who believe they have been unjustly investigated and prosecuted. The next day Trump’s DOJ amended the settlement, not only creating the nearly $1.8 billion slush fund, but also barring the IRS and Treasury Department from pursuing investigations into Trump, his family and his businesses. Mark, this is yet another unconstitutional emolument and further cements Trump’s status as the most corrupt president in US history. Trump is carving out billions for his allies while simultaneously protecting himself and his inner circle from accountability.
For years, Donald Trump avoided paying any federal income taxes. The DOJ just expanded its settlement with him to bar the IRS from pursuing any investigations of any tax returns he’s filed with the agency as of May 19th. Who knows how big a free pass they just gave him? IRS rules require the agency to audit the president every year. We have no way of knowing whether the IRS had any existing audits of Trump, but if they did, this settlement just wiped them away. For a president whose net worth is an estimated $6.5 billion and who just experienced “the most lucrative year of his life,” according to Forbes, a get-out-of-jail-free card for past taxes is an unprecedented level of corruption. By settling his $10 billion lawsuit against his own administration, Trump and the DOJ just engaged in the most brazen act of self-dealing in the history of the presidency. They moved fast to avoid the scrutiny of the judicial process and very likely violated the Constitution. Mark, we already knew Trump’s DOJ wasn’t going to hold him accountable to the law, and now they are admitting it in writing—but CREW’s not relenting. |
