A newly released FBI document shows that Director J. Edgar Hoover forwarded a Washington state minister’s unusual aerial observation to federal defense and atomic energy officials in 1949. The correspondence offers a glimpse into how reports of unexplained aerial phenomena were being handled by U.S. authorities during the early years of the UFO era.

A newly released FBI document sheds light on how reports of unexplained aerial phenomena were handled at the highest levels of government during the early years of the modern UFO era.

The correspondence centers on a letter sent to FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover by Reverend Charles Barnes on Jan. 31, 1949. Barnes described witnessing an unusual event several months earlier while in Washington state.

According to the letter, Barnes observed “four beams in the sky” moving from the northwest to the southeast and converging in the Cascade Mountains. He reported that small clouds appeared to form within the beams and that where they met “a great explosion effect” became visible. Barnes estimated that the phenomenon remained visible for at least 10 minutes and appeared to rise to an altitude of roughly 10,000 feet.

Believing the observation could have implications for national security, Barnes said he felt compelled to notify federal authorities.

Hoover responded with a brief letter thanking Barnes for bringing the matter to the government’s attention. More significantly, newly released records show that Hoover subsequently forwarded the report to both the Pentagon and the Atomic Energy Commission for their information.

The documents do not indicate that an investigation followed, nor do they offer an explanation for what Barnes observed. However, the correspondence demonstrates that unusual aerial reports were reaching senior federal officials during a period when public and government interest in unidentified flying objects was rapidly growing.

The sighting occurred just two years after the 1947 wave of UFO reports that helped launch the modern flying saucer era and several years before large-scale public interest would surge again during the 1950s.

While the Barnes report does not provide evidence of what caused the phenomenon he described, it offers another historical example of how unexplained aerial observations became part of official government records. For researchers examining the history of UAPs, the correspondence serves as a reminder that questions about unusual objects and events in the sky have been part of the national conversation for decades.
