Mark, if FCC Chairman Brendan Carr put out a highlight reel, it would be a horror show. Here’s what he’s been up to lately:
He threatened ABC’s broadcast licenses because Donald Trump didn’t like Jimmy Kimmel’s jokes. He opened a sham investigation into The View for having guests who criticize the president.
He launched a proceeding to put warning labels on TV shows featuring LGBTQ+ characters — treating the existence of trans and nonbinary people on screen the same as obscenity or violence. The FCC has no authority over the TV-ratings system, but that isn’t stopping Carr from joining in on Trump’s bigoted crusade against the LGBTQ+ community.
He’s trying to gut the Lifeline program that helps low-income families afford phone and internet service, using bogus fraud allegations to scare people away from a benefit they’re entitled to.
Free Press is fighting Carr on every one of these fronts. And we need 100 gifts by June 30 to keep it up.
We don’t take a cent from business, government or political parties. Your contribution will help us reach our June goal and keep up the pressure against these corrupt mergers.
We filed legal briefs defending ABC’s First Amendment rights. We led more than 50 organizations in opposing Carr’s baseless and bigoted LGBTQ+ warning labels. We defended the Lifeline program with facts and evidence that exposed the chairman’s falsehoods.
Carr likes to pretend he’s the Minister of Truth. But the law is clear: The FCC cannot dictate the editorial decisions of any media outlet. But Carr keeps trying — because companies that capitulate get their mega-mergers approved, and companies that resist get investigated. |
