Today, July 24, marks the one-year anniversary of Trump’s Executive Order on homelessness. In just one year, the order has become this administration's blueprint for destroying federal homelessness policy.
Let’s be clear: despite the myths and misdirection coming from the White House, the only real solution to homelessness is getting folks the housing and support they want and need.
But instead of using their power to bring down rent, fund vital healthcare services, and help people make ends meet, the Trump administration is attacking homeless people and undermining real solutions. This makes homelessness worse.
We know this order didn’t come out of nowhere. It was the brainchild of groups like the Cicero Institute, the right-wing, billionaire-backed think tank behind the nationwide effort to make it a crime to be homeless.
Cicero’s laws are bringing about devastating consequences in states across the country. Just this week, NPR covered the story of one of the first homeless people charged with a felony under Tennessee’s Cicero law. This powerful reporting again shows that anti-homeless laws cause real harm and make homelessness worse. But instead of rejecting this approach, the Trump administration is taking policy recommendations from the same billionaires responsible for these horrific results in Tennessee and across the country.
