Friend, you’ve stood up for oversight before. Now the watchdog that makes oversight possible is on the chopping block. When a story about a federal scandal gets exposed, or a whistleblower finds the courage to come forward, it is likely because a system of independent watchdogs helped make it possible. If you’ve ever felt relief that corruption and abuse of power didn’t stay hidden, that’s this system at work. Tomorrow a key House committee will vote on a bill that would dismantle that system by abolishing the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency (CIGIE), the fundamental watchdog agency that oversees all the inspectors general in the government and supports whistleblowers. Protecting oversight has always been important. Under an administration that has made it its mission to sabotage oversight, it’s indispensable. The Restoring Integrity and Efficiency to Inspector General Oversight Act would destroy the backbone of the oversight system. It would hand the work of coordinating inspectors general to the Office of Management and Budget and its director Russell Vought — someone who is more of an enemy to watchdogs and whistleblowers than an ally. Congress created the inspectors general system to be independent of the executive branch. Moving CIGIE’s core responsibilities to the Office of Management and Budget removes that independence.
