Four members of Congress have stock in SpaceX, while sitting on committees that regulate it

Mark,
Four members of Congress who sit on committees that directly regulate Elon Musk’s SpaceX have a family stake in the company’s stock.
According to NOTUS, Representative Gil Cisneros and family members of Representatives John McGuire, Dan Meuser and John James have together purchased up to $130,000 in SpaceX stock since the company went public on June 12.
All four members sit on committees that could influence SpaceX operations, including the House Armed Services Committee and the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.
Mark, to be clear: Yes, these are conflicts of interest. No, this should not be allowed.
Well-timed stock trades by members of Congress—just like these—have eroded public trust in our institutions and in our lawmakers. It’s time to put an end to this unethical practice. For years, members of Congress from both parties have bought and sold stocks in companies they oversee and fund with taxpayer dollars, fueling a crisis of public trust.
Americans deserve to know that their elected officials are serving the public—not their own investment portfolios. But in 2022 alone, The New York Times found that at least 97 members of Congress, or their spouses or dependent children, traded financial assets connected to their official work.
That’s simply unacceptable.
Despite broad, cross-partisan public support for a congressional stock trading ban, Congress has been unable to pass legislation that confronts these widespread conflicts of interest.
They’re even trying to pass the Stop Insider Trading Act, which purports to address congressional stock trading without actually preventing members of Congress from profiting off of their offices. It would NOT stop members of Congress from owning individual stocks, profiting from trades or making decisions that could boost the value of their own portfolios.
That’s why CREW and seven other good government organizations submitted a letter to Congress in opposition to the Stop Insider Trading Act (SITA) and are calling on Congress to instead pass the Restore Trust in Congress Act—a simple, popular and bipartisan solution that accomplishes what SITA purports to do.
And the public is with us: More than 5,000 CREW supporters added their names to our letter demanding Congress put the public interest ahead of personal profit.
