Donald Trump expected the Senate to fall in line behind Todd Blanche.
Instead, Blanche emerged from his confirmation hearings with serious questions still hanging over his nomination and Republicans openly withholding their support.
His nomination can be defeated. But we need the resources to turn this opening into overwhelming pressure on the Senate.
Blanche spent years defending Trump personally. As acting attorney general, he has helped bend the Justice Department to serve Trump’s interests. Now, Trump wants the Senate to place him permanently in charge of the nation’s most powerful law enforcement agency.
At his hearing, Blanche even referred to Trump in the present tense as his client, declaring, “I’m his lawyer,” before correcting himself.
He also refused to put to rest an enforceable agreement establishing a nearly $1.8 billion slush fund that could benefit Trump and his allies. And he only met with survivors of Jeffrey Epstein’s abuse after a Republican senator threatened to withhold the vote Blanche needs to advance.
Several survivors left that meeting describing Blanche as dismissive, abrasive, and more interested in checking a box for his confirmation than pursuing justice.
This is the man Trump wants running the Justice Department.
But Republicans are divided, and Blanche cannot afford to lose even one vote on the Senate Judiciary Committee if Democrats remain united in opposition.
That gives us a real opportunity to stop him before his nomination reaches the Senate floor.
