This is what it looks like when the justice system is bent to serve Trump, MAGA loyalists, and the powerful interests behind them instead of the public.
For over a year, Trump and his allies have exploited the courts, the Department of Justice, and the power of the federal government to protect their friends, punish their critics, and force MAGA priorities onto the country.
Now Trump wants Todd Blanche confirmed as Attorney General, putting one of his own former personal defense attorneys in control of the DOJ.
At the same time, Trump continues to nominate MAGA judges who can protect him from accountability and continue to impose the MAGA agenda from the federal bench for decades. These are not separate threats. They are two sides of the same project: a DOJ led by loyalists, and courts stacked with judges in lifetime positions ready to bless abuses of power and roll back our rights.
This is the architecture of a justice system built to protect MAGA power: loyalists running the DOJ, extremist judges on the bench, allies shielded from accountability, and critics forced to pay a price for speaking out.
People For the American Way is fighting back by exposing and opposing extremist judges, pushing for much-needed Supreme Court reform, demanding answers when the DOJ protects Trump’s allies, targets his critics, or fails to defend equal justice, and mobilizing people across the country to defend the courts from MAGA takeover.
This fight cuts to the core of every freedom we defend.
A justice system captured by Trump and his allies threatens voting rights, civil rights, reproductive freedom, LGBTQ+ equality, workers’ rights, free speech, and the basic right to dissent. It means the DOJ can become a refuge for Trump loyalists and a threat to anyone who challenges them. It means the federal courts can be used to lock in an extremist agenda that voters have rejected at the ballot box.
Trump and his allies know their agenda cannot survive real accountability from the American people. So they are trying to entrench power inside the institutions that decide whether our rights are protected, whether abuses of power are checked, and whether the law applies equally to everyone.
We cannot answer this with outrage alone. We need sustained public pressure, rapid response, research, organizing, and the resources to expose every abuse, pressure decision-makers, and build the case for real reform.
People For the American Way has been fighting for the reforms this moment demands: restoring balance and integrity to the federal judiciary, advancing serious Supreme Court reform, opposing dangerous judicial nominees, exposing the harm caused by Trump judges, and demanding answers when the DOJ protects Trump’s allies, targets his critics, or fails to defend equal justice.
But the attacks on the American people are escalating.
Trump’s allies are counting on people feeling too exhausted to fight back. They are counting on critics being intimidated into silence. They are counting on the public becoming numb to a justice system that protects the powerful and punishes dissent.
