Michael Sussman on Tam Mossman, Sun July 5, 2026

 Michael Sussman

I'm working on a novel whose protagonist channels a disembodied entity. I'm wondering whether Jane ever wrote about her relationship with Seth and how voicing him all those years influenced her personality and day-to-day life.

As I've mentioned before, I grew to know Tam Mossman, who was Jane's editor at Prentice Hall. He sat in on many Seth sessions and eventually began channeling an entity named James in public sessions in Philadelphia.

Tam was conflicted about James and had some concerns about his own mental health. As he relates in the preface to his 1993 book, Answers from a Grander Self, he had me do psychological testing on him and on James, and was relieved that the findings didn't indicate multiple personality disorder or psychosis of any kind.

I'm wondering whether Jane is known to have had any questions about her own mental health or to have wondered about the psychological dimensions of the experience.

Although most of my familiarity with the books is from decades ago, I seem to recall that she expressed genuine uncertainty about Seth's actual nature.
