Mark,
There was one clear loser in the Supreme Court term that ended in June: the American people.
Our brand-new Supreme Court term report examines the decisions that weakened our freedom to vote, expanded Donald Trump’s power, marginalized LGBTQ+ people, endangered immigrants, undermined gun safety laws, and opened our elections to even more big money.
Read our new Supreme Court term report. >>
The unmistakable pattern from this term’s rulings is clear: The Supreme Court’s far-right majority consistently used its power to benefit Donald Trump and other powerful interests at the expense of the rest of us.
In Louisiana v. Callais, the 6-3 majority completed its years-long demolition of the Voting Rights Act and laid the groundwork for a devastating reduction in Black representation.
In Trump v. Slaughter, the same majority overturned 90 years of precedent and gave Trump sweeping power to fire the leaders of formerly independent federal agencies.
The Supreme Court also upheld bans targeting trans student athletes, struck down a reasonable gun safety law, and removed critical limits on coordinated spending between political parties and candidates.
Even some of the term’s positive rulings showed how precarious our most fundamental rights have become. Birthright citizenship under the Constitution survived by just one vote. So did states’ ability to count mail ballots that are cast by Election Day but arrive afterward.
Explore what the Supreme Court decided and what those rulings mean for our rights. >>
And the next Supreme Court term is already taking shape, with major cases involving voting rights, LGBTQ+ equality, and access to assault weapons on the docket.
People For will continue monitoring the Supreme Court, exposing the real-world consequences of its decisions, and leading the charge for vital reforms, including a binding ethics code, term limits, and expanding the Supreme Court under the next pro-democracy president.
That work is only becoming more urgent as the far-right majority continues using the Supreme Court to dismantle our rights and strengthen Trump’s grip on power.
