RepUS -- What the Latest Supreme Court Decision Means for Election Spending
- RepresentUsrepresent.usFrom:hq@represent.usTo:Mark M GieseWed, Jul 1 2026 at 10:07 AM
Hi Mark,
The Supreme Court just delivered (yet another) gift to major donors and special interests, ruling that political parties (like the Republican National Committee or Democratic National Committee) can coordinate directly with candidates.
While we're out here trying to end pay-to-play corruption and increase the power of ordinary Americans over large donors, this ruling goes in the opposite direction.
But we're not giving up, and neither should you.
OK, Let's Break It Down
Before this ruling, the Federal Election Campaign Act limited campaigns from directly coordinating with groups like national parties. Now, that limit has been abolished and candidates and national parties can directly work together, meaning even more money will flow into our elections.
National parties can accept higher levels of money from mega donors than individual campaigns. Thanks to this ruling, donating to a national party will directly fund campaigns, and that means mega donors will have even more say in a candidate's campaign than they already do.
So What Does That Mean For You?
But RepUs, you might say, why do we care? Haven't they always kind of coordinated? And that's a little bit true, but now even the thin barriers are gone.
Mega donors now will have an even larger impact, and when their voices grow louder, it's harder to hear what everyday Americans want.
But also, if you get tired of seeing campaign ads, sorry about that. Advertisers are required to give candidates the lowest rate possible for things like television ads. So now candidates will have access to more money, but still pay the same low rates for advertising…meaning you'll be seeing even more ads during campaigns, earlier than ever.
So What's Next?
We are still committed to building a nation that works for the people, not just the powerful few. And while this ruling enables corruption to thrive and increases the power of a few ultra-wealthy donors, we the people still have a voice. We will continue to pressure Congress to end the corrupt capture of our systems and instead create a government of, by, and for the people.
Thanks for being a part of the movement. We're so glad you're here.
