The U.S. has postponed the trial of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro until June 2027, extending his imprisonment after he was kidnapped and brought to the United States following a U.S. military operation in Venezuela. The delay comes after years of U.S. sanctions, diplomatic isolation, and repeated efforts to pressure Venezuela through coercive measures that have inflicted enormous hardship on ordinary people.

I just got back from Venezuela, where last month two successive earthquakes left thousands dead and many more displaced. Visiting the epicenter, the only thing I could compare it to is a war zone. Entire city blocks have been reduced to rubble, and thousands of people are now living in tents and shelters.
The resilience and organization of the people of Venezuela following this disaster is nothing short of astonishing. I went to cultural centers, schools, temporary shelters, communes, and recovery sites. I witnessed firsthand how communities have mobilized en masse to provide food, shelter, psychological support, and medical care in coordination with public institutions. In many cases, survivors of the earthquakes are leading these efforts. I got emotional as I thought back to the horrific U.S. responses to natural disasters in the US, like Hurricane Katrina or Maria.
This massive mobilization shows us what a revolutionary society looks like. Over the past several decades, the people of Venezuela have built a society that is permanently organized from the bottom up. This means that when catastrophe strikes, the response is instant. The communal councils and the institutions of popular power have the structure and capacity to begin working in coordination immediately. The care that people want to give their neighbors has been institutionalized by the Bolivarian Revolution.
Marco Rubio wants us to believe he's in control, but from what I saw on the ground, while the U.S. might be stealing Venezuela’s oil and minerals, it has not stolen the people’s spirit. After years of hybrid warfare — debilitating sanctions, theft of public funds, and, more recently, military attacks — the U.S. has failed to break their will. Not even a natural disaster can change that.
I left Venezuela with sadness, anger, and awe. While Venezuelans are processing the profound loss from the earthquakes, our country is trying to colonize theirs. Yet the people continue their fight for sovereignty, dignity, and peace. They continue to build an alternative to capitalism in the midst of this unthinkable tragedy. Now more than ever, we must stand by their side.
