Dear Mark,
Restructuring Amtrak once again entered the conversation in 2026. I think we’ve heard that a time or two over the past 55 years.
The Rail Passengers Association moved quickly when reports surfaced that the Federal Railroad Administration was exploring a major restructuring of Amtrak. Our position was guardrails, not panic or blind trust.
Whatever structure Amtrak uses, the focus of its mission has to remain public service.
You can’t orphan long-distance trains. State-supported trains can’t be left to fend for themselves. And the Northeast Corridor can’t be treated as a private real-estate machine detached from the national system.
Labor, safety, transparency, congressional oversight, and passenger protections have to be built in from the beginning.
The Association put those points into the public debate early, before the proposal hardened into conventional wisdom. In official Washington, the first version of the question often determines the answer.
That matters because Amtrak is not an abstract institution.
The reasons people ride trains are as different as the country itself. Work. Family. Health. Mobility. Opportunity. Or simply the need to get where they are going in a way that works for their lives. Whatever the reason, for millions of Americans, rail is part of everyday life, and the need is literally every day.
Your hard-working staff works every day WITH you and FOR you. Please make a gift today to help us keep fighting for better, safer, more reliable, and more widely available passenger rail. Your tax-deductible donation makes the Association’s work possible as we build tomorrow.
With Determination,
Jim Mathews
