Demand safeguards to protect humanity from AI

No matter what issues are important to you, corporations and other bad actors are probably using AI to make things worse:
Our environment is under threat from massive AI data centers that run on dirty diesel generators, pollute nearby communities' air and water, and spike electricity prices
Health insurance and health care companies are increasingly using AI to make decisions, including about whether or not to deny coverage or prescription renewals, leading to wrongful denials
The Pentagon is punishing companies that don’t want their AI programs to power lethal weapons systems without direct human control
AI videos, images, and audio are becoming more common in politics, as everyone from Donald Trump to the government of Iran is amplifying or creating AI-generated content. While states are pushing back against AI in election ads, there is still no federal standard — and the Trump Administration is trying to undo state AI laws
So we deserve safeguards that protect privacy, security, health, and the environment. But corporations cannot be trusted to place responsible limits on their own AI models.
That’s why we’re joining AI experts, parents, workers, and faith leaders to support the Pro-Human AI Declaration: A global call to take the future of AI out of billionaire and corporate hands and put humanity first.
Artificial intelligence technology is growing rapidly and AI products are becoming more common in everyday life.
And while Public Citizen has worked with state legislators across the country to pass laws stopping AI from doing things like swaying elections or creating nonconsensual sexualized content of people, the federal government is lagging behind.
We can’t stand by while AI becomes more powerful, more deeply embedded in our society, and more dangerous.
We need to show lawmakers that there’s a massive public demand for laws that protect humanity from threats posed by AI.
