The day their son was killed, they dressed him in a blue sweater because it was a little chilly that morning. It also happened to be Makan's 7th birthday. After the strike, Makan's parents identified his bloodied sweater at the morgue, but no one was ever able to find his body. All they have to visit is an empty, symbolic grave. They travelled all the way from Minab to Hiroshima to remember the victims of U.S. warfare in Japan, but also share the story of their son who was mercilessly taken from them. How could they not see themselves in the victims of Hiroshima, where countless people were completely vaporized, their remains never recovered? Makan's parents emphasized on their trip to Hiroshima that they want accountability for what happened to their son. If they are making that demand, then it is our job to elevate it.
