The government is spending $7 trillion a year. And yet if you asked where exactly all your hard-earned tax dollars go, it wouldn’t be able to tell you. That’s because the government’s system for tracking and making public its spending data is broken.  USAspending.gov is supposed to be a tool for transparency. Where you can go to see what the government is doing with your tax dollars — and whether that money is making its way back to you and your community.   But what you often get now is money that is untraceable once it is distributed to your state, and award descriptions that are short and vague to the point of inscrutability.  You deserve to know what the government is doing with your taxes, down to the last penny.
