Dear Mark,
UP and NS would very much like everyone to focus narrowly on today’s freight network. But America isn’t spending billions of dollars planning future passenger corridors just to have those corridors treated as an afterthought in the largest railroad merger in modern history.
About HALF of the new Corridor ID routes now being planned would operate, in whole or in part, over lines controlled by the newly combined railroad. If freight traffic grows substantially and passenger needs are treated as a footnote, then future passenger service could be priced out, delayed, or strangled before a single train ever rolls.
So, the Rail Passengers Association has pulled out all the stops to be in this fight. Not because mergers are naturally good or bad, but because the law says the needs of today’s and tomorrow’s passengers count.
Will long-distance trains have defenders willing to stand firm? From meeting with congressional leaders on Capitol Hill to speaking up during Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern merger discussions. Passengers can rest assured that the Association will be your voice when the decisions are made.
