Here’s the deal: The FCC just voted to eliminate the 39 percent national television-ownership cap. Congress wrote that cap into federal law. The FCC does not have the power to repeal it.
But Chairman Brendan Carr did it anyway because he wants to clear the way for Trump-aligned media conglomerates to buy up local-TV stations across the country.
Free Press and our allies plan to appeal this unlawful decision in court. Free Press doesn't take a cent from business, government or political parties.
In March, Carr unlawfully waived this same cap to approve Nexstar’s $6.2 billion takeover of Tegna.
We sued, state attorneys general sued — and a court halted the deal.
Now Carr’s doubling down, trying to wipe the cap off the books entirely to pave the way for a Trump takeover of local media. Without this rule, one or two dominant broadcasters could control every single local-TV market in the country, gut local newsrooms and replace real journalism with bargain-basement content.
Suing the FCC is one of the best routes we have to stop Carr’s illegal actions, but we can’t do it without you.
