Donald Trump cannot force his election agenda through Congress. So earlier this year he signed an executive order that would put his administration and the U.S. Postal Service between voters and their mail-in ballots.
Now Trump is asking the Supreme Court to let him impose it before the November midterms.
Trump’s order would direct the federal government to create new lists of eligible voters. States would be forced to identify everyone they intend to send a mail ballot, and the Postal Service would be prohibited from mailing a ballot to any voter who does not appear on the federal list.
That means a flawed match, outdated record, or bureaucratic error could prevent an eligible voter from receiving their ballot.
A federal judge blocked the scheme, correctly ruling that the executive branch does not have the authority to set election rules. But instead of trying to defend the order’s constitutionality, the Trump regime is arguing that the courts should stand aside until federal agencies begin putting it into effect.
The administration wants permission to set the machinery in motion first and force voters to deal with the consequences later.
With control of Congress hanging in the balance, even a small disruption could prevent thousands of people from voting. Confusion and delays could be especially devastating for voters who depend on receiving their ballots by mail and may not discover a problem until it is too late to fix.
If the Supreme Court clears the way for Trump’s order, People For must be ready to respond immediately.
