Federal officials said in court documents that they halted billions of dollars in funding for energy projects to states based “solely” on whether they were based in “Blue States.”
This is not normal. It’s another example of how President Trump has weaponized the government in his second term and illegally tried to grab power over funding decisions constitutionally granted to Congress.

Trump reportedly threatened to impose “harsh measures” on Colorado unless it released election denier Tina Peters. Then the Trump administration cut grants to the state, and Governor Polis bowed to pressure and let Peters out early.
Mark, a consistent theme during the second Trump administration is that while they claim to be all about spending money efficiently, in reality, they just want to use federal funds for their pet projects (like the White House ballroom)—while they withhold funds from programs Americans depend on.
Through it all, CREW has been fighting for transparency and accountability. Here’s just one example:
Last March, the Office of Management and Budget took down its spending database, which discloses critical federal spending information widely relied upon by Congress. We sued to secure transparency—and we won.
Trump’s OMB violated transparency laws and prevented the American people from seeing how taxpayer money is being spent when they took down the spending database. That’s illegal.
So we sued them for trying to keep Americans in the dark by burying information the public needed in secretive spending plans—and we won.
The administration was forced to restore the website and reveal legally binding plans to spend congressionally appropriated funds.
We’re proud of this victory because it proves what happens when we fight back. The American people have a right to know how their money is being spent—and when this administration tries to manipulate, withhold or conceal that information, we have to hold them accountable.
And recent reporting that this administration is withholding funding from Colorado, and even “blue states” in general, makes clear exactly why transparency matters.
When the Trump administration blatantly abuses its power, the American people need to know.
