Mark M, there's a lot going on in the federal case that could severely restrict mifepristone access nationwide. Here's a quick recap:
The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments in Louisiana v. Federal Drug Administration (FDA) earlier this month. The outcome of this case could restrict nationwide access to mifepristone by forcing patients to pick up the medicine from their provider in person, rather than getting their pills via mail or from their local pharmacy.
Mifepristone is a safe and effective medicine prescribed for abortion and miscarriage care. Any new restrictions on mifepristone would make it harder for people to get care, including in states where abortion is protected.
During the hearing there was a lot of talk about legal procedure, and standing, and precedent. But what this case is really about is control. It is part of a coordinated, politically motivated effort to make it harder for everyone, everywhere to get an abortion when and where they need one.
Regardless of what the 5th Circuit decides, a U.S. Supreme Court decision issued earlier this year blocks the State of Louisiana's attempt to restrict access to mifepristone for now. But the case continues.

For now, patients are still able to get mifepristone by mail or pharmacy. But the future of access to the medicine hangs in a delicate balance.
This case, and the threats to abortion, will continue.
Even though the Department of Justice (DOJ) was in court arguing on behalf of FDA and against Louisiana, the agency has also made clear its hostility to abortion access. Shortly after his confirmation hearing, Attorney General Todd Blanche promised DOJ would work with the federal government "so that the Dobbs decision becomes permanent in every single state."
