CREW Partner Update - October 22
Hi Mark,
It has been a busy few weeks at CREW as we continue to demand transparency and accountability from the Trump administration.
On Monday, in response to Meta’s decision to temporarily shut down the No Kings Instagram account over the weekend in the middle of the mobilization, we submitted a FOIA request to DHS seeking any records related to No Kings or contact with Meta about the No Kings account.
Last Tuesday, we filed a new suit alleging that the president’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, is violating both the Constitution’s Appointments Clause and the Ethics in Government Act by acting as one of the country’s top diplomats without undergoing Senate confirmation or filing financial disclosures.
Our team, as always, continues to release investigations and reports in addition to our policy and legal work. More on our most recent work below.
Thanks,
AdamAdam Smith

-
Last week, CREW–along with our partner Democracy Forward–filed a suit on behalf of the League of Women Voters, Electronic Privacy Information Center, and the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) challenging the Trump administration’s secretive and unlawful effort to collect and compile sensitive personal information about millions of American voters into a massive nationwide database.
-
A federal court recently sided with CREW, ruling the DOJ’s campaign to consolidate sensitive voter data violates voter privacy and illegally intrudes on states’ authority over elections—a critical decision that could protect an untold number of voters from being wrongfully removed from the voter rolls at this very moment.
-
Our team submitted a complaint to the Office of Government Ethics encouraging an investigation of White House Senior Counselor for Trade and Manufacturing Peter Navarro who appears to have violated federal ethics law by using his official capacity to promote his book.
-
CREW filed a new FOIA lawsuit demanding the Trump administration produce records related to it’s claims about noncitizen voting.
-
We filed numerous Hatch Act complaints against administration officials who illegally used federal resources to advance partisan elections including an especially egregious video by the FBI and a press release by ICE.

In a response to a CREW FOIA request, the Secret Service claims to have “no responsive records” about Trump’s April memecoin gala at Mar-a-Lago–does that mean they didn’t vet any of the attendees? Read our investigation here.

CREW submitted a comment to the Census Bureau encouraging the withdrawal of its proposal to redefine “usual residence” and thus exclude certain people in the United States from the apportionment count and its proposal to collect information about legal status by adding a question to the decennial census or by relying on interagency data-sharing agreements.

We released this letter with former federal district Judge Jeremy Fogel, the Executive Director of Berkeley Judicial Institute, on the need for Congress and the courts to consider structural reforms to their judicial security protocols.

Along with our lawsuit against Jared Kushner, we published this Q&A about his work in the administration.
