James Carville says he’d rather GOP win House by 5 seats than Dems win by 5: They’d be hostage to DSA

Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville said he would rather see Republicans keep control of the House by five seats than watch Democrats win the chamber by the same margin, warning that a “nightmare” razor-thin majority would leave party leaders “hostage to the DSA.”

Speaking to The Bulwark’s editor-at-large Bill Kristol for his Bulwark on Sunday podcast, Carville argued that the size of a Democratic victory in November could matter almost as much as winning control outright.

“I would be disappointed if it comes in at 225 House seats,” Carville said. “That would almost be – I would rather the Republicans keep the House by five than the Democrats to win by five because if that happens, they’re hostage to the DSA.”

Carville said a slim majority would leave Democratic House leaders with little room to maneuver between moderates and the party’s expanding democratic socialist wing: “Like Hakeem [Jeffries] cannot move. There’s no place for him to go.”

“And even if you have a close Senate, [Senator John] Fetterman would keep [Chuck] Schumer Pepto-Bismol all night,” Carville added.

The comments continue a months-long campaign by Carville against Democratic Socialists and other candidates on the party’s left flank.

In June, he urged congressional Democrats to “stand up” to socialist candidates after a string of primary victories in New York, arguing that lawmakers should not treat some DSA-backed winners as members of the Democratic Party.

Carville escalated that criticism in August, demanding that DSA candidates stop using the Democratic Party’s “Goddamn name” and arguing that Democrats were being defined by figures who were not actually aligned with the party’s broader coalition.

Speaking on Sunday, Carville told Kristol that those internal tensions made the size of any Democratic House majority unusually important: “So, I think this is one of these races where margin matters a lot. Margin is winning big, it’s almost as big as winning, which is weird, but yeah, it’s a nightmare, 225 [seats].”
