View in browser Across the southern border, there is now a wall of AI-powered surveillance cameras. These cameras can see for miles and can track people and vehicles.
You are being told that these cameras are for securing the border. And you probably think they are stationed on a “line” along the very edge of the country — but they are actually so embedded in some neighborhoods that they can see into people’s windows and watch people leave their house.
The federal government plans to mount more of these cameras on the perimeter of the entire country.
This is not normal. We cannot be convinced that it is normal.
Government agencies are using invasive technology with little to no oversight and accountability, all at the expense of your privacy. The excuse is that mass surveillance is a necessary trade-off for public safety.
But the federal government burrowing itself into your personal life does not make you safer — it makes you far more vulnerable to its abuse.
And the problem of government surveillance is bigger than just those border cameras, Mark. It is also the network of hundreds of thousands of automated license plate trackers at street corners across the country. It is the biometric scanners that log your face when you go through airport security. It is the data broker companies that track your online activity and sell that information about you to government agencies like the FBI, ICE, and Customs and Border Protection.
POGO is fighting alongside you to put an end to this abuse and reassert the constitutional right to privacy under the Fourth Amendment. Together, we were able to block reauthorization of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, put forth reforms to close the loopholes that allow for warrantless searches and third-party data purchases, and educate Congress on the added risks of AI-powered surveillance. Your support makes this fight possible.
There is no democracy without privacy. Thank you for holding that value close.
