Your group chat is now evidence

Mark, under a Trump directive called NSPM-7, the federal government can treat a neighborhood group chat about ICE agents on your block as evidence of terrorism.
The Department of Homeland Security has already investigated more than 150 nonprofits under the guise of “election integrity” — and with Election Day on Tuesday, groups registering voters could be next.
The Trump administration buried all of this in legal jargon and a clunky acronym, so we laid it out plainly in our new report, Enemies of the State. It exposes a coordinated blueprint to crush dissent — and gives lawmakers a roadmap to fight back.
Gifts from people like you made that report possible. Free Press doesn’t take a cent from business, government or political parties: We need 250 contributions by Saturday at midnight to keep this fight going.
If you’ve ever wanted to back work like this, start here.
Our report calls on Congress to pass the Right to Record Act, which would protect your right to record government officials in public spaces. The report also discusses the Fourth Amendment Is Not for Sale Act — which would limit government purchases of your personal data from data brokers — and notes that state lawmakers can safeguard their own agencies from the federal actors carrying out chilling investigations and prosecutions under NSPM-7.
Free Press has fought for your rights to connect and communicate since our founding in 2003. When the government starts treating a text to a friend or attendance at a protest as evidence, we’re there to fight back.
In solidarity,
Candace and the rest of us at Free Press
P.S. The Trump administration wants people to feel too scared to speak up or show up. Let’s show we’re not afraid. |
