Hakeem Jeffries Faces Backlash After 1 Telling Comment On Possible Trump Impeachment
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) is already drawing backlash in the wake of the Democrats' massive victories on Tuesday, saying members of his caucus are not focused on potentially impeaching President Donald Trump.
"I haven't had a single member of the House Democratic caucus talk to me about impeachment," Jeffries said at a press conference on Wednesday. "We've been relentlessly focused on affordability and accountability."
Jeffries announced his intention to seek the speakership on Wednesday, but his comments drew some online ire, even calls for him not to be elected speaker.
Many commenters accused Jeffries of caving to the Republicans just a day after the country resoundingly rebuked Trump's agenda.
Politics: Critics Take Hakeem Jeffries To Task For Praising Trump's Latest Pardon
"Practically every Dem voter in the country demanded accountability to stop the advance of fascism. We are at the brink. Having no Speaker at all would be better than Hakeem Jeffries," one commenter wrote on X.
"I remain convinced that Hakeem Jeffries is simply the wrong Speaker for this political moment," another wrote.
"No, we definitely ARE looking for justice and accountability," political commentator Hasan Piker wrote.
Jeffries also drew criticism for his comments on MS NOW's "Morning Joe," where he said, "the American people don't want us to get even; they want us to get things done on their behalf."
Several petitions have also circulated online urging Democrats in the House to elect someone other than Jeffries as speaker.
One petition on Change.org, started months before Tuesday's elections, has gathered over 300,000 signatures as of Wednesday.
