The results of yesterday’s election are a stunning, but long coming, rebuke of the Trump-Vance agenda, including the gutting of U.S. investment in family planning and reproductive health programs across the country and around the world.
We are excited about the new champions of this essential work who will be joining Congress in January. While it’s still too early to know the final margins, we do know that Democrats have won at least 54 seats in the Senate and as of this morning, NBC News projected that they would control 258 seats in the House. That means that strong majorities in both chambers will be committed to defending and expanding reproductive health care and reproductive freedom.
When the new Congress is sworn in on January 3, we’ll be there to push lawmakers to start rebuilding reproductive health programs and reverse the damage done over the past two years. It won’t be fast or easy, but it is necessary. Millions of people around the world have lost access to contraceptives due to the actions of the administration and Republicans in Congress. That, as you know, has enormous implications for population growth and undermines global efforts to protect the environment, ease poverty, improve health, and build safer, more stable communities and countries.
We are celebrating the results and preparing ourselves for the hard work to come in Washington and in communities across this country.
